Network World iSCSI SAN Review
Network World - Monday, July 28, 2008
Products from NetApp, HP, Compellent and Dell led the results of our tests over and over. LeftHand Networks, StoneFly and FalconStor all had some very high points in our testing, but all also fell way down in their overall management capabilities. We consistently found room for improvement in D-Link, Nexsan, Celeros, and Kano Technologies.

Storage Projects Rise in Importance
New York Times - Wednesday, January 02, 2008
Other industries are also swimming in storage-hungry data. Capitol Broadcasting Co. (CBC), a Raleigh, N.C.-based operator of five TV stations and several radio assets, is grappling with a 120% growth in e-mail volume and a wealth of media-rich graphics, audio and video files that reside on its networks.
"While e-mail archiving was the catalyst to move beyond DAS, other looming IT challenges were also driving the need for more robust storage," explains Chris Welty, a CBC systems engineer. The company is moving to IBM's BladeCenter architecture and has purchased an IP SAN from StoneFly Inc. in Hayward, Calif., in a further effort to provide single-instance storage on file servers, Welty says.

Storage Alphabet Soup: Of DAS, NAS and SANs
Network Centric Security - Friday, August 31, 2007
A NAS looks like a file folder to a user or camera, said Jame Ervin at Stonefly Networks. That's a potential disadvantage: many devices can store data in it, but it's slower at retrieving data. So for larger surveillance networks, a storage area network might be the better fit.
A SAN is a network of hard disks devoted to storage, analogous to a file cabinet with many files in several drawers, so storage can be shared across devices and users. This flexibility enables users to partition a SAN so that data from a particular camera or surveillance area is written to a specific area on the SAN, Ervin said.

Setting up remote data centers, disaster recovery sites and new offices can become a painless process. DNF Buys StoneFly for Enterprise Backup
eWeek - Wednesday, February 08, 2006
Dynamic Network Factory purchased IP-SAN pioneer StoneFly Networks on Feb.7 for an undisclosed price. The move gives DNF a new weapon with which to accelerate its iSCSI development aspirations toward larger enterprise deployments, and brings a broader cache of backup and Fibre Channel SAN (storage area network) optimization capabilities under its hood.

Ecker Eases Backup with IP SAN System
eWeek - Monday, October 31, 2005
With the IP SAN setup, the first set of disk-to-disk "snapshot" backups requires less than an hour; they're usually finished by 1 a.m. daily and are performed at IT headquarters, Polymenakos said. Follow-up disk-to-tape backups are completely transparent to the user. "I can do the backup from the snapshot at 2 a.m. when it doesn't affect anybody," he said.
Polymenakos said there hasn't been a failure in eight months. Total backup time has been cut by perhaps 90 percent, he estimated.

Backup Grows Up
Network World Fusion - Monday, May 16, 2005
With disk-to-disk devices and virtual tape libraries, backups can run within reasonable time frames, and more data can be kept online, which enables faster recoveries. Denton Central Appraisal District (DCAD), for instance, switched to a StoneFly Networks disk-based backup system and now can back up its 50 servers in the same amount of time it used to take to back up one.

Strategic Storage: Backup starts to inch forward
searchStorage.com - Thursday, December 23, 2004
There are signs that things are finally improving for storage managers who want to craft successful backup strategies. The move toward disk-based backup technology is an important step forward, and companies are melding these new products with management-based tactics that treat backup like the business problem that it is.

Strategic Storage: Eyeing IP Storage
searchStorage.com - Friday, December 17, 2004
"The primary motivator to use IP SANs is cost," said Michael Fisch, an analyst with Clipper Group in Wellesley, Mass. "IP is something that enterprises understand, whereas Fibre Channel requires expertise in 'an entirely separate' network protocol."

Users look to ease SAN adoption
Network World Fusion - Monday, October 25, 2004
The companies are following a trend of introducing SAN packages for users who are looking to set up their own environments that are easier to use. Among the SAN bundles already available are the Dell/EMC AX100, QLogic's SAN Connectivity Kit and StoneFly Networks' IP SAN, which lets users attach Advanced Technology Attachment drives to the Gigabit network.

iSCSI Use Booms, Early Adopters Swoon
Computerworld - Wednesday, May 12, 2004
IP storage-area networks got a boost at the Storage Decisions show in New York recently as ardent users said that deploying iSCSI was love at first sight.
Early adopters made it clear that they weren't using the iSCSI protocol as a replacement for more expensive Fibre Channel SANs, but were primarily adopting it for its cost, ease of installation and as a platform to run less business-critical applications such as Microsoft Exchange or SQL Server.

Plug-and-Play Network Storage Saves Reinsurer
Insurance & Technology Online - Friday, March 19, 2004
With network data storage needs expanding rapidly and a current storage solution in place that the company had clearly outgrown, the information technology team at LifeCare Assurance-a long-term care reinsurer based in Woodland Hills, Calif.-had to find a new way to manage network storage. The challenge was augmented by the fact that as a mid-size company with limited IT resources, LifeCare needed a solution that was not only cost-effective but one that could be easily managed and maintained by the internal information technology staff.

PBS Changing the Channel to iSCSI
eWeek - Thursday, December 11, 2003
As one of the nation's most established television entities, PBS is known for broadcasting cutting-edge programs. As shown by its internal use of the nascent iSCSI standard, the broadcaster is just as cutting-edge when it comes to technology. "It's been very refreshing to take a leading-edge technology such as iSCSI and have it integrate well into our Fibre Channel SAN," Walters said. "I've achieved my goal of finding an inexpensive way to quickly attach non-mission-critical servers to centralized storage."

iSCSI's early adopters
Computerworld - Monday, November 17, 2003
Storage-area networks that use the Internet SCSI protocol are gaining acceptance with corporate IT as a supplement to -- or a complete replacement for -- Fibre Channel SANs. Early adopters of storage-area networks based on the Internet SCSI protocol say that so far, cost savings outweigh performance concerns.

StoneFly announces next-generation Storage Concentrator
Computerworld - Friday, October 10, 2003
The Storage Concentrator i3000 combines Advanced Technology Attached RAID storage with storage provisioning engines and uses an Internet SCSI (iSCSI) protocol router/bridge for synchronous replications over metropolitan-area networks or asynchronous data replication over unlimited distances using an Ethernet network. Ken Walters, senior director of enterprise platforms at Public Broadcasting Service in Alexandria, Va., currently uses two of Stonefly's i2000 model storage consolidators to pool storage on his SAN, which is supported by an IBM Shark storage array. But Walters wants to create a business continuity and disaster recovery architecture using the new i3000.

iSCSI - a Quick Fix for Insurance Firm
Computerworld - Thursday, February 20, 2003
When Safeco Corp.'s business-insurance division almost ran out of available storage capacity on three Compaq ProLiant servers last fall, a storage-area network (SAN) consolidation project that would give the machines additional resources was still more than six months away. ISCSI turned out to be a quick, but scalable, fix. The native iSCSI device that the insurance and financial services firm installed consists of an appliance with proprietary storage software that IP SAN appliance start-up StoneFly Networks Inc. developed and attached to an array of Advanced Technology Attachment-based disk drives made by Nexsan Technologies Inc. in Woodland Hills, Calif.
